Jonathan Pikalek's Home Page

fargo madison

The images above are cellular automata gardens generated from weather data for Fargo, ND & Madison, WI. The original code was provided by dealmeida.net. Generally it looks better in browsers that support tranparency in PNGs. Clicking the button below will cycle through four different display styles, two of which have been tweaked to cause neighboring colors to 'merge'.

I submitted some content to the Context Free Art project. Here is a direct link to my Pythagorean tree. I may roll out a dedicated gallery for my context free art somewhere down the line.

Due to time constraints and a lack of developers, I'm shelving my programming competition project. More info on the AI programming competition page.

1-07-2008

Forgot to post the 11-20 update before break. Anyway, it's now live along with a hefty update to the AI programming competition page.

11-20-2007

Additions & bumps were made on the comics page.

10-31-2007

My resume & vita page is now up. I also finally got around to fixing an annoying CSS layout error - the nav column is now colored down the entire length of the page a intended.

9-12-2007

Quick state-of-development update on the AI programming competition page.

7-05-2007

Link update on the comics page.

5-21-2007

Updated the links embedded in the automata images. Also, changes were made on the comics page.

12-08-2006

New additions and alterations on the comics page.

11-01-2006

The automata scripts have been reloaded, and now include four display alternatives. There are still some issues with caching & browser specific problems with the transparency which I'll look into when time permits. I've been thinking about writing some completely new image automata scripts inspired by some of the ideas in an old Artificial Life Lab text I have kicking around, but they won't be done until far later in the semester.

10-27-2006

The automata scripts and their resultant images will be down for a couple days. Ditto for my old Texture Maker App dev pages. For the time being, the images will be 'frozen' and the texture maker links will divert to a zipped archive of the old content.

10-16-2006

The start of the AI programming competition site is finally up. I've posted a draft of the user's manual. Much more of the manual is already written and I'll gradually be migrating it to HTML. It'll still be a while before the API is finalized, but, once complete, the user's manual should convey enough of the essential concpets to facilitate some high level planning.

9-29-2006

I've been tweaking the cellular gardens a bit, the latest results can be seen on the alternate page. It's still very much an experiment in progress with a severe lack of lab time. While on the topic of works in progress, I'm hoping to have some coding/development content related to the AI programming competition up soon. Finally, the comics page has undergone some nudging.

8-29-2006

The Comics page has been revised. As per usual, I'll be making adjustments as I go. If you have a comic to recommend, drop me a line.

8-21-2006

The revised Game Dev page is now up. Gradually I'll be making content and layout adjustments to it. If you have additional resources you feel should be linked, let me know.

8-15-2006

I'm slowly porting things back onto the new server - some older links may still be down.

8-01-2006

In an attempt to keep this site a little more current and make my procrastination a little more productive, I will be migrating things to a new format and layout. Currently, I know just enough CSS to be dangerous, but I'll attempt to keep the chaos to a minimium. For the time being, all of my old content is still acessible in the original format via the links menu. In the unlikely event that your revisiting my site and can no longer locate something, just look me up and let me know.
