First meeting of the Sri Lankan Student Association (SLSA) for the academic year 2008/2009 was held on September 6th 2008 at the Memorial Union Food Court at 8.30 pm. According to the agenda, we started the meeting by singing the national anthem of Sri Lanka.
The new President, Theekshana Jayakody, introduced the new officers in SLSA. After that, he asked the new students to introduce themselves. Then Theekshana explained how to become a member of the organization. It was only by paying $5 membership fee. He suggested the idea of having a get together to become more familiar with the members. Shanaka Rajapakshe suggested to visit the Buffalo River State Park and Tharaka Chandanayake suggested a pot luck party at the Buffalo River State Park. All members approved these suggestions.
Thereafter, Theekshana asked for the best day and time so that every body possible could attend the SLSA meeting. Shalindra Rathnasinghe suggested the president to decide three days and times and send them to members so every one can let him know about their availability.
Theekshana reminded the members about the successful events that were organized in the first year of the SLSA such as the Garage Party, New Year celebration, and Independence Day celebration. He also emphasized the importance of working together to be a successful organization. Furthermore, he suggested another Garage Party during this semester.
Thanusha Koralage suggested the members of the Tri College Sri Lankan to present a talent show. Thereafter, the organizing committee for the talent show was formed. The committee consists of Thanusha, Shashi, Shashika, Manil, Viranga, Vidura, Kushan, Panchali, Pramuk and Chulaka. Tharaka reminded the members to present any piece of art work to the International Students Association.
In addition, members suggested having a Sri Lankan movie night either to show only for Sri Lankans or to the whole NDSU community. Shashika suggested planning a year’s calendar at the beginning of the year.
Chulaka mentioned the scholarship hours for undergraduate students which can earn by participating in any cultural organization.
Finally, everybody discussed fundraising projects and volunteer services.
Meeting was adjourned around 9.30 pm after the president, emphasized to every one the importance of coming to the meeting on time.
