All sororities were built upon the same founding
values:
* Academic Excellence
* Involvement and Leadership
* Community Service and Philanthropy
* Sisterhood and Friendship
Sororities symbolize all that we wish to accomplish in our
lives. They represent the struggles we all face as we grow.
Why we cling to them no one can explain, but in the end, we
are all stronger for it.
The National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) is the national
coordinating body of 26 member sororities. Locally, the Panhellenic
Council is the governing body for the NPC sororities on a
college campus. The Panhellenic Council coordinates Recruitment,
provides programming and activities for sorority women, and
works as a self-governing support system to the sororities
on the NDSU Campus.
There are 3 NPC sororities at NDSU. The decision to join one
of these sororities means that an individual is interested
in a college experience based upon the founding values of
sorority life.
People ask why I am in a sorority and I try to explain
all the things a sorority is that they cannot see. A sorority
is more than letters on a sweatshirt, I say. More than traditional
songs, a gold pin, rituals, and obligation, or a way of life.
A sorority is learning about people, a sorority is giving
without expecting a return. A sorority is earning respect
from others, as well as for yourself.
What it means to be Greek:
Academic
Excellence
Greek organizations were founded on the principle of successful
scholarship. The fraternities and sororities at North Dakota
State University are serious about their academic success.
The current Grade Report exemplifies the commitment Greeks
have to their academic success. All sororities have grade
point average requirements to become members.
Leadership
Development
Today, employers seek individuals who have been actively involved
in leadership roles on campus, and who possess an array of
practical and transferable skills. Since sororities are self-governing,
they offer a wealth of opportunities for members to take leadership
positions. Greek life offers opportunities to be a leader
in various campus activities, as well as in individual chapters.
Greeks are leaders in the Student Government Association,
Mortar Board, Blue Key Honor Society, varsity sports and cheerleading,
just to name a few. Many successful entertainers, athletes,
and United States presidents were members of Greek organizations.
Sisters
touch your heart in ways no other could. Sisters share their
hopes, their fears, their love, everything they have. Real
friendship springs from their special bonds.
Sisterhood
If you ask any sorority member the most important aspect of
her college experience, she will no doubt tell you about the
lasting friendships made through the Greek system. Membership
in a sorority is for life. When individuals join a Greek Organization,
they will make friends within their chapter and throughout
the Greek community. Each organization instills a unique bond
that is often called sisterhood. Both are nurtured through
shared work, community service projects, intramural athletics,
socials, and the successes and frustrations of self-governing
groups of women.
Community
Service
Chapters frequently collaborate on community service and philanthropic
projects, such as a fall canned food drive and concerts that
benefit their favorite charities. Community service projects
and philanthropic fund raisers provide members with the opportunity
to assist many national and local organizations.
